The great team at AudioXtra have been with us for a number of years and were a big part of the award winning HardHT project. They didn’t hesitate to get behind BuiltQ and we are thrilled to have their outstanding products in the car.

AudioXtra are the sole importers of Dynamat in Australia and this product is an absolute must for any quality rebuild. Endorsed by the world renowned Chip Foose, Dynamat has been seen in just about every top end car to come out of the US. Dynamat lowers road noise, makes your audio system sound better and louder and helps keep your vehicle cooler.

Dynamat has a series of products for different uses – most of which were utilized on HardHT and BuiltQ. Dynamat Xtreme was used on just about all the interior sheet metal cutting out noise, heat and vibration. Dynaplate and Dynashield were used under the bonnet and exhaust and Dynaliner was used under the bonnet on top of the fore-mentioned products. For the flooring we went with DynaDeck, an ultra-durable carpet replacement that’s waterproof and tough as nails. This car is a driver; and Dynamat makes it that much pleasurable.

Check out their website and make sure your next project has the very latest gear from AudioXtra.

Katech has a 35 year racing legacy across NASCAR, Indy, ALMS Corvette and Grand Am to name a few with a real penchant for Endurance Racing. They build race cars, race engines and ultra race components for the elite teams and have won every 24HR Race there is.

In 2005 Katech Performance was launched to meet the needs of private customers looking for the same expertise and equipment which is used in professional race programs, but geared toward the retail market.  Now Katech Performance is a large part of the company and offers performance products, high performance engines and vehicle packages for many GM late model applications.

When we were looking for companies specialising in GM LS components, Katech was top of the list. Their advice and knowledge throughout this build has been invaluable and the products absolute first class. A pro-tourer has to be genuinely drivable, from the track to peak hour traffic and the LSX ZR1 twin disc clutch provides just that. Couple this with the silky smooth LS9 ZR1 supercharger camshaft and you have the ideal driver with big, useable power. With a number of their street performance products, Katech cleverly start with top shelf GM ware from the ZR1 Corvette and Camaro line and improve upon them. They have the reliability of factory made with the enhanced performance of aftermarket development which allows Katech to boast – ‘we don’t win dyno comps we win 24hr races’. Love it.

The Chop Shop

Central Coast, NSW
p: +61 2432 25514

It takes a lot of research, parts, contacts and people to transform a 40 year old car into a hard driving G-machine. But the key ingredient is the team that puts it all together – that’s The Chop Shop. They specialise in fabrication, chassis and suspension design and construction along with the customisation of anything metal into a work of art.

Proprietor Laurie Starling and Team Lead Aaron Gregory possess a mass of knowledge and experience well beyond their years and across the breadth of the car building game. The guys are well entrenched in the show car scene, so they know each build must be unique and of a high professional standard that’s in keeping with the shop’s awesome reputation. They expect more of themselves than any customer would and this philosophy drives a work ethic that needs to be seen to be believed.

On BuiltQ, Laurie and his team cut, sliced, fabricated and welded the flooring for the expanded tunnel and got the big Michelin’s snug under the rear guard as well as fitting the blown LSX. They built a 4-link rear end that is possibly the best piece on the entire car, complete with a billet BuiltQ stamp. All this and more in less than 6 weeks and all on a finished painted car without a hitch. What we find astounding, they call ‘just another day on the job’ and they do it with such character and charisma it makes the whole experience a real pleasure.

And the kicker! Some of the brilliant components found on BuiltQ will be available as off-the-shelf parts straight from the Chop Shop. Items such as HQ tubular arms and coil-over kits, LS coil relocation kits and the fitment of huge Harrop brake kits built for the VE now available for HQ-WB is very exciting.

So if you’re planning your next hot rod, show car, street car, mini truck or tyre tearing muscle car and you want builders who are as passionate as you – go The Chop Shop. Give Laurie a call, or look out for them at Australia’s biggest custom car shows, standing next to the coolest cars in the country.

LSX Tuning

Marrickville, NSW
p: 02 9550 2026

The transformation from a reasonably standard HQ coupe running an EFI 5 litre to full pro-tourer began with the purchase of the Mast Motorsports long block from Texas, USA. The tricks to importing a pre-built engine are knowing exactly what you need up front, purchase from a well established vendor and have someone local who is willing to look after it when the motor arrives. We did our homework, and Girch from LSX Tuning was the name we kept hearing and what an invaluable role he has played in the success of BuiltQ.

As the name suggests, the team at LSX Tuning are LS engine specialists. They do engine rebuilds, stroker kits, head and cam packages, NOS kits, single and twin turbo kits as well as supercharging, custom tuning, cold air induction and a whole lot more. Their results speak for themselves with many records in regards to power figures and quarter mile performance from the humble 5.7L and 6.0L V8 engine.

Let’s face it, today’s mechanics need to know as much about software as they do about motors and finding someone who can do it all is a real bonus. Shop owner Girch Newman has been hands-on with this build from day one, making sure we get it right from the start. He’s thorough and truly passionate; you can tell that by his own 1400hp rear-mounted twin turbo LSX Calais sitting quietly at the end of the workshop. Speaking of which, the garage is absolutely immaculate and ever present with big horse powered HSV’s, AMG Mercedes and the odd top end drag car.

So if you want guaranteed workmanship for anything from tuning, bolt on fast parts, engine building, brake and suspension upgrades all the way to insane turbo combo’s check out the boys at LSX Tuning. Just be sure to book, they’ve got a long list of followers...

Adrad Radiators

Australia wide
p: 1800 882 043

Pure drivability and hassle free motoring is a must for a modern day street machine and keeping it cool in traffic and under hard driving is essential. Darren Duncan and the guys from Adrad were exceptional to deal with when it came to the custom radiator set up for BuiltQ and we couldn’t be happier with the product.

Adrad is an Australian owned family company specialising in the manufacture, importation and distribution of quality radiators, automotive air-conditioning parts and other heat exchange products. Their products are diverse and meet the needs of automobiles, light trucks and commercial vehicles, heavy on highway vehicles, heavy off-highway vehicles, customised aluminium products for racing and performance vehicles and heat exchange products suitable for power generation applications.

The Adrad aluminium radiator, intercooler and oil cooler cores from their Performance division are brilliant and can be found in most of the front running V8 Supercars as well as drag cars, show cars, drifters you name it.

In short, a great product from a great Australian company; one which will come in handy on those hot summer track days.

Vic, Qld and WA

To transform the car in such a short timeframe the plan was to obtain what we could off the shelf. This is simple if you’re building a Camaro or Mustang and you’re familiar with the likes of Detroit Speed, Ridetech and The Ring Brothers. In Australia, there are few options when it comes to retro-fitting modern motors and drive trains in old Aussie cars but Di Filippo (DPE) is a company ahead of the game.

It wasn’t just a case of what’s available; the products have to be top notch in both fit and finish. The 17/8 4 into 1 headers for LS motor in HQ from Di Filippo are very high quality and went straight in without a hint of hassle. The black ceramic coating looks great and will keep the temps down in the engine bay. DPE are well on the way to becoming one of Australia's leading manufacturers and suppliers of after-market high-performance exhaust systems.

As well as exhaust components, DPE also make diff housings and we jumped at the chance to put one of these solid fabricated pieces in the rear end of BuiltQ. The 4-link diff set up built by The Chop Shop looks brilliant and the tuff DPE housing was the perfect starting point.

The quality of their products is equally matched by their standard of customer service, so call DPE – the home of horsepower.

Lakeview Smash Repairs

Kincumber, NSW
p: 02 4368 1988

Lakeview Smash proprietors Rick and Ian have by far spent most the amount of time and effort on BuiltQ. They took your typical rusty and fender damaged HQ and spent months, years even bringing the old metal back from the brink. It’s a huge job on any old car, but the coke bottle figure of the gorgeous coupe makes it that much more interesting. There are panels on angles, creases and lines all of which challenge the best body repairers to get the damn thing straight. And this HQ coupe would now be one of the straightest and sharpest you’ll find anywhere in the country.

Both Rick and Ian took to this car like it was their own. They’ve had enormous input into the build and have been so supportive over such a long period of time. If you’re from the Coast and fancy nice cars chances are you know them already. They’ve been operating out of their Kincumber workshop for well over a decade and have an impeccable reputation. Like most smash repair shops the bulk of the business is insurance work on everyday drives with one major difference – attitude. Attitude towards their work and towards every customer no matter what the job. Big or small, the boys at Lakeview take such pride in their work and they operate with a level of integrity rarely found these days.

Way to often you hear the horror stories of builds going wrong and results falling short of expectation, particularly with the elite cars. But in the end it comes down to trust, and we’ve been so fortunate to have Lakeview Smash involved from the get-go. The body is superb and the Glasurit Indianapolis Red is rich and deep, well beyond the requirements of a regular road going pro-tourer.

‘Big Ian’, built like a tank with a heart of gold and the hands of a true craftsman. And ‘Ricky Bobby’, with the Keith Urban looks and the mind of a genius. They make a great team and should be your first choice for any panel and paintwork.

Ultimate Conversion Wiring

Sydney based
p: 0412 293606

Custom wiring is a very specialist field and one that requires higher knowledge and advanced planning. Justin from Ultimate Conversion Wiring came highly recommended from a number of references and with good reason. Justin has worked on many of Sydney’s top show cars and drag racing machines and was happy to add BuiltQ to his list of projects.

Offering a convenient mobile service, Ultimate Conversion Wiring made the difficult job of combining an LSX engine and VE running gear and LS1 ECU into the HQ chassis a snatch. Everything is functional and accessible, while still clean and simple as not to detract from the slick engine bay. Justin has a heap of experience with LS motors and their software so his skill set was perfect for the job.

Ultimate Conversion Wiring can tailor the job to be the best for your particular application. They have worked on many types of vehicles from everyday cars right through award winning show cars and everything in between. They can also perform a lot of custom programming from Dash clusters , BCM's ECU's and more. They carry a lot of the factory tools like TECH 2 , FORD IDS/VCM and also a heap of aftermarket tooling like Hanatech and HPTuners and EFILive.

Take the headache out of your next wiring stage and give Justin from Ultimate Conversion Wiring a call. Check out their website too, has a great range of products and information, videos and photos illustrating the brilliant job these guys do.

Oxytech Powder Coatings Pty Ltd

Horsley Park, NSW
p: 1300 353 655 or +61 (02) 9675 4253

They say the big statements come from the small details which give a certain look or theme to a car. With BuiltQ we wanted to be different and go with modern eclectic; a functional mix of colours and textures. Tuff and practical and not limited to one finish like polished billet and chrome or all black. From the outside BuiltQ looks classic muscle car with chrome and rich paint, yet the engine bay is all business with a mix of wrinkle black, matt black, machine finishes with touches of high polish and smoked titanium. It just looks like each piece is meant to be there doing its job, without trying too hard and having everything match the piece next to it.

So where does all this choice in finishes come from – Oxytech Powder Coatings. Oxytech is the exclusive Australian distributor of Oxyplast Powder Coatings which are manufactured in Singapore under license to the Protech/Oxyplast group, one of the largest powder coating manufacturers worldwide, with production plants in over 30 countries.

Oxytech is now Australia’s only one stop shop for all your powder coating supplies. As a highly valued Oxytech customer, you will experience professional, yet personal service and high quality products. They strive to work with each customer individually, through product requirements, expedient delivery and technical support ensuring that you get each and every job done well.

They certainly turned around the 4-link diff set up in record time for BuiltQ and we were thrilled with the end result. Satin black housing with black chrome finish on the tube arms looks awesome and we’ll bring a similar look into the engine bay and front suspension. There are loads of colours and finishes to choose from, all of which are illustrated clearly on their comprehensive website.

So picture the look and Oxytech Powder Coatings will make it happen. They may well have just become our favorite new friends!

Castle Hill Performance Centre

Castle Hill, NSW
p: (02) 9680 2777

One of our favourite components on the builds we do are the custom exhausts. Many shops can fit aftermarket systems, but to design and fabricate a full custom job is certainly a specialist field. David Keys and his team at Castle Hill Performance Centre (CHPC) have been doing such work for over 13 years and have built an excellent name in the industry.

The system on BuiltQ is a custom made mandrel bent dual 3” stainless system from the extractors that has been tig welded and incorporates a merge pipe, custom stainless wool packed mufflers and is flanged before the rear axle with the rear pipes ceramic coated black. From the outside the headers are black with matching black pipes out the back, while underneath is set off with the raw finish of stainless steel. The car sounds incredible; deep, throaty and tuff yet still streetable. Dave and the guys did a fantastic job and were so keen and passionate from day one.

Over the past few years CHPC has developed a reputation for being one of Australia's leading performance shops for Holden Commodore LS1 onward powered vehicles. This is a result of constant research and development as well as having enthusiastic adaptive staff. CHPC is able to customise or scratch build components to do the job properly rather than just making do with bolt-on parts. This is what sets CHPC apart from their competition.

Castle Hill Performance Centre also supply all major aftermarket performance parts and are equipped with a Dyno Dynamics dynamometer, housed in a fully enclosed dyno cell for any tuning requirements. So for all your performance needs give Dave and the lads from CHPC a call!
